Sceptre International Group News – Ford offers glimpse of electric future at Geneva Motor Show

US manufacturer to launch electric Focus plus plug-in and hybrid C-MAX models

Ford has confirmed it will unveil low carbon versions of three of its biggest selling models at the Geneva Motor Show later this week, hailing the new cars as the start of a “new era” in the company’s history.

SceptreInternational-focus_electric The US manufacturer will present its new generation electric Ford Focus, first shown off last year, along with a plug-in hybrid and a full hybrid version of its C-MAX compact people carrier.

The Ford Focus Electric, the company’s first zero emission, rechargeable passenger car, will go on sale in Europe in 2012 before launching in North America by 2013.

It is expected to boast a range of around 80 miles from a single charge and will compete directly with the new generation of electric cars from mainstream manufacturers, such as Nissan’s Leaf and Mitsubishi’s iMiEV.

It is also expected to feature mobile technology integrated into the car to allow drivers to plan trips, monitor the vehicle’s battery, or receive alerts for vehicle charging using their phones.

“Focus Electric is the culmination of years of research and development,” said Derrick Kuzak, Ford group vice president for Global Product Development. “More importantly, it’s the start of an exciting new era for Ford and our customers.”

The C-MAX Energi, Ford’s first ever production plug-in hybrid, is also set to be launched at the show along with a standard hybrid version of the C-MAX. Both models are slated for release in North America in 2012, with a European launch following in 2013.

Along with the Focus electric, the new C-MAX models comprise three out of five new electrified vehicles from Ford set to go on sale in the next couple of years.

Deliveries of the first electric Ford, the Transit Connect Electric van, began in North America at the end of last year and the small commercial van will be launched in Europe later in this year.

Meanwhile, the company has said another next-generation hybrid electric vehicle will be announced in the coming months with a similar release schedule to the two C-MAX models.
